Product Injuries

Most product recalls take place because the product has caused injuries or poses a substantial risk of causing injury or death. The Consumer Products Injury Commission collects data on product injuries.

  • There were an estimated 2,290 deaths and 11,420 injuries due to residential fires caused by products.

Violations of Employment and Labor Laws

In 2008, researchers conducted a comprehensive survey and found workplace violations were severe and widespread in some labor markets.

The survey revealed:

  • Twenty-six percent of workers in the sample were paid less than the legally-required wage.
  • Over a quarter of workers in the sample who worked more than 40 hours in a week were not paid the legally-required overtime rate.
  • Violation rates vary by industry and occupation. Violation rates are higher for childcare workers, apparel and textile manufacturing workers, and personal and repair services workers.
  • Women are more likely than men to experience violations, and foreign-born workers were more likely than U.S.-born workers to experience violations.

Elder Abuse Statistics

  • Almost 1 out of every 10 elderly people will experience some sort of abuse.
  • More than 2 million cases of elder abuse are reported each year.
  • The elderly are unlikely to report the fact that they have been abused; therefore, most statistics probably grossly understate the extent of elder abuse and neglect.
  • Between 1999 and 2001, almost one-third of all nursing home facilities were cited for violations of federal standards that could cause harm or that did harm elderly residents of those facilities.
  • More than 40% of nursing home residents have reported abuse, and more than 90% report that they or another resident of the facility have been neglected.
